A memorial to fallen farmers is more than a tribute to lives lost—it is a call to honour their labour by caring for the land they worked. These farmers gave their lives in service to others, and the soil they toiled is their enduring legacy. To remember them is also to commit to stewarding the soil with dedication, ensuring it remains fertile and life-giving for generations to come.

While visiting Lunenburg, Nova Scotia a few years ago I stumbled upon a monument to local fishermen lost at sea. Standing there, gazing out to the harbour, I thought about how farmers and fishers work in the public service providing food for consumers. Although there are differences, questions jumped to mind: Is there a monument to farmers who have lost their lives in farm accidents and if not, why not?”

For the families and communities like mine, who have sacrificed so much, this monument will be a beautiful permanent place to reflect, heal and remember their loved ones who were part of the incredible act of feeding the world.

I fully support the importance and impact of this project, and I’d be delighted for both myself and CASA to be included as supporting advisors.
